Amaranth is mainly available in two different versions: as whole grain or as puffed/popped amaranth. The amaranth grains usually cost less than half than the puffed ones, and it is insanely easy to pop the grains yourself at home in just a few minutes.
Here’s how it works:
Heat your non-stick frying pan on your stove; wait until it is really hot. (The pan is hot enough if the amaranth grains immediately start to puff when you put them into the pan.)
Put in a tablespoonful of grains and cover the pan quickly with the lid.
Watch the amaranth pop just like popcorn – this only takes a few seconds.
Move the pan back and forth a little to shuffle the amaranth so it doesn’t get burned; wait a few seconds for any latecomers.
Remove the amaranth quickly after it’s all popped by emptying the pan into a bowl.
Repeat steps two to five until you’ve puffed the amount you need. Better only pop a smaller portion of grains at the same time, as a larger amount burns more easily.
It’s really that simple.
